How to Prevent Bad Breath While on Braces

Can Braces Cause Bad Breath?

Braces do not cause bad breath. The ceramic or metal is completely odorless. However, the placement of the brackets and wires on your teeth encourages plaque to grow around them.

Plaque is a colorless film that reeks of an unpleasant odor. It can thrive and multiply if you do not take measures to remove it. Besides plaque, food particles that are stuck around your braces may also contribute to bad breath, especially if you eat foods that contain herbs and spices with strong odors.

What Can You Do to Prevent Bad Breath?

Luckily, you can prevent bad breath by brushing your teeth thoroughly, using an FDA-approved fluoride-based toothpaste, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and special soft picks to clean tight spaces.

Brushing should be done religiously – twice a day for about two minutes. Flossing is also encouraged to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth. Last but not least, swish your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash.
